The Ranger Group has some of the greatest employees and it’s time, once again, to recognize one of those dedicated team members! We are devoting our December Employee Spotlight to Matthew Zagurski. Matthew has been with the company since February 2017 and is a recruiter in our AEC Division.
How long have you been in the DFW area?
Born and raised!
What has been the best thing about growing up in DFW?
The best thing about growing up in DFW has been the number of things I have been able to do. I grew up going to all the pro sports games from the Rangers and Cowboys to the Mavs and Stars. That was definitely huge. Being from Dallas exposed me to so much and it got me involved in lacrosse which eventually got me a great opportunity at a great university!
What college did you graduate from and what was your degree?
I graduated from Southwestern University with a Political Science degree where I focused on political theory.
What were you involved in at school?
I was on the lacrosse team at Southwestern and was also a member of Phi Delta Theta.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When I was growing up, I actually wanted to get into speech writing. Probably not the normal child’s dream job, but I was obsessed with the show West Wing in middle school.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love anything outdoors. Hunting, camping, hiking, golf, and pretty much anything else that involves getting out of the city!
Who is your favorite sports team?
The Dallas Stars. I do support all the hometown teams but the Stars are for sure #1!
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would love to spend a month or two in Argentina. I studied the country extensively in college and it has so much diversity not only in people, but landscapes. There are mountains, deserts, prairie, beaches, and Patagonia.
Why did you join Ranger Group?
I saw a place where I could be a part of a story. I knew I wanted to work for a small company where I had the chance to grow and be successful. Ranger offered that opportunity and I knew I couldn’t pass up the chance.
What drew you to the staffing/sales industry?
The opportunity to be in sales while still providing a service. It’s an industry where the servant mentality is at the forefront and that is something that I think sets staffing and especially Ranger apart.
What motivates you to work hard?
My motivation is to be the best I can be every day. It may be cliche, but it really rings true to me and it’s something I try to keep sight of at all times.
Do you have a favorite recruiting moment?
My favorite recruiting moment so far is working with a candidate who was desperate to find a job. The fact that we were able to help someone in his hour of need and get him a fulfilling job in his industry was such an awesome feeling. It really makes up for any bad days to do something like that.
Since you have been with Ranger for almost a year, what advice do you have for someone looking to get into staffing/sales?
My advice would have to be to stay focused on your goals. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and let a bad moment get the best of you or to be complacent when you are having a good run. Neither of them last long and you always need to stay focused on the big picture.
What do you hope to accomplish professionally in 2018?
I hope to be promoted to sales and start the next stage in my career!
Since it’s December, what is your favorite holiday memory or tradition?
My favorite holiday tradition would have to be something we have done on my mom’s side of the family for years. We always have made a birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas Eve and then before we open presents at my grandmother’s house, we sing Happy Birthday. It started as something fun for us as kids and now that we are all grown up it has become a great tradition.
